Had an interesting conversation with an athiest today. It really brought to light to me something Iconsider to be a common mental block that athiests come to in their logic.
Him: What do you get from your religion.
Me: A sense of understanding of the purpose of the human race, and of my role in that purpose.
Him: What about hope?
Me: Yes, certainly. A hope that my understanding of that purpose will continue to expand, and that will help me become a better, more enlightened person.
Then later...
Him: Well I guess Iapos;m just a secure enough person that Idont NEEDreligion to give me a purpose.
Me: Neither do I.
Him: Thats not true, you said the reason you were religious is that it gives you a sense of purpose.
Me: No I didnapos;t.
Then he goes back to my previous quote, thinking he has trapped me in some sort of hypocracy.
Me: What I get out of my religion, and why Iapos;m religious in the first place, are two different questions. Iam not religious as a means of gaining purpose, I am religious because Ibelieve in God. A sense of hope and purpose is an effect of believing in God, not the cause of it.
Idonapos;t really understand why it seems to work this way, but a common athiest view is that religious people somehow force themselves to believe in God so that they feel better. This really doesnapos;t make any sense, as a belief is much deeper than this. You canapos;t force a belief upon yourself. Iapos;m not sure if athiests are implying that christians really somehow "brainwash" themselves into believing something that they must deep down know isnt true,or that we just say we believe in order to "brainwash" others. Either way, it shows the lack of understanding that athiests have of the true Christian mind. The belief is there because it is there. It just "is." The rewards and punishments that come from having faith are inconsequestial to the existance of the faith itself.
Iwant to rant a bit also about a misconception that athiests often use regarding science and logic. The concept that its not "logical" to believe in God, because there is no scientific evidence. Ineed to go have a smoke and a beer though, maybe tommarow.
